Synopsis:

Their marriage turning stifling after just four years, a young New York couple attempts to escape their ennui by carefully strategizing their own breakup. Blurring the lines between fiction and reality, real-life couple Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones star as themselves in order to offer an unguarded exploration of young love, lust, and the hardships of codependency. By exploring alternatives to monogamy, creating arbitrary rules for their relationship, and doing everything in their power to avoid getting emotionally bruised, Daryl and Zoe attempt to discover a means of growing apart, together. – Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Synopsis:

Ivy (Zoe Kazan of Revolutionary Road) returns home to Brooklyn for her summer break from college. She misses her boyfriend, and calls him frequently, but they can’t quite seem to connect. She spends a lot of time with her longtime friend, Al (Mark Rendall of 30 Days of Night). Al clearly has a longstanding crush on Ivy, about which he’s never done anything, probably out of some combination of fear and respect for their friendship. His confusion is exacerbated when, due to family circumstances, he’s forced to stay with Ivy and her mother (Maryann Urbano) during his break from school. As the summer goes on, Ivy deals with her epilepsy and the slow, painful dissolution of her relationship, while Al starts to look for love in other directions. Bradley Rust Gray wrote and directed The Exploding Girl, while his wife, So Yong Kim, served as a producer. Fans of the Cure will recognize the title as a play on their song “The Exploding Boy,” the flip side of “In Between Days,” which was the title of Kim’s directorial debut, on which Gray served as co-writer and producer. The Exploding Girl had its North American premiere at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival, where it was shown in the World Narrative Competition. – Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Synopsis:

An Ivy League classics professor becomes mixed up in his lawless identical twin’s drug dealings after receiving word that his brother has been murdered, and returning to Oklahoma to discover he’s been hoodwinked. To say that Bill Kincaid (Edward Norton) is ashamed of his upbringing is an understatement at best. Turning his back on his working-class parents and working diligently to erase any traces of his Southern accent, Bill develops a reputation as a true scholar dedicated to excellence and philosophical exploration. His brother, Brady (also Norton), on the other hand, grows weed. Arriving home to find Brady very much alive, Bill winds up mending bridges with their capricious mother, Daisy (Susan Sarandon), and reluctantly agrees to help his brother out of a tight jam involving notorious drug kingpin Pug Rothbaum (Richard Dreyfuss), who might just send both siblings to an early grave. Meanwhile, Bill can’t help noticing that free-spirited poet Janet (Keri Russell) has somehow managed to find true happiness in the most unlikely surroundings. – Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Synopsis:

A married pair of ex-urbanites relocates to a small village in hopes of starting a family, only to receive an unexpected surprise thanks to a mix-up at the adoption agency. Sven and Göran are finally set to realize their shared dream of becoming parents. In preparation, the happy couple even decides to leave city life behind in favor of moving to a quaint village in the country. Unfortunately, the local villagers don’t exactly extend a warm welcome to the optimistic couple; while some greet them with outright hostility, most are content simply to shun them. Upon receiving news that the adoption agency was unable to locate a suitable international baby, Sven and Göran agree to take in a local orphan. On paper, Patrik was listed as being age 1.5, though upon meeting their new adopted child it quickly becomes apparent to Sven and Göran that someone misplaced a decimal point. In reality, Patrik is a homophobic 15-year-old juvenile delinquent who’s none too happy about being taken in by a pair of aging gay men. Still, Göran recognizes that Patrik needs a home, and agrees to put the openly hostile boy up until he and Sven can find a more suitable place for him to live. But former street punk Sven isn’t quite as accommodating due to the fact that he knows well what a young ruffian such as Patrik may be capable of. Over time, Sven’s trepidation about Patrik prompts him to confront not only his own misgivings about marriage and suburban living, but his long-buried feelings about his own estranged son from a previous marriage as well. – Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Synopsis:

The witty and somber sides of growing up in working-class Britain are explored in this coming of age drama. David (Thomas Turgoose) and Emily (Holliday Grainger) are a pair of teenagers who grew up in the same trailer park in Norfolk. David and Emily have grown to be best friends; his introspective nature is a compliment for her rambunctious side, and they share a fondness for playing tricks on others. However, life hasn’t been kind to Emily lately — her mother (Susan Lynch) has been deemed an unfit parent by the court, and her custody has been awarded to her father (Nick Sidi). Emily isn’t happy with this turn of events, and rather than move in with her dad, she disappears. David is worried about Emily’s safety until he gets word from her that she’s moved into a cave on the outskirts of town. David becomes part of Emily’s support system, bringing her provisions, but his deeper feelings for her are hurt when he finds out Emily has a boyfriend, an older man named Steve (Rafe Spall), and that she’s pregnant with his child. The Scouting Book For Boys was the first feature film from director Tom Harper. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
