Gears Of War Movie To Be District 9 Style?

The Gears of War franchise is one of the top-selling video game franchises in history. It’s been said for a while now, that a movie adaptation will happen. Most people expect a GOW movie to be a $200 million plus budget manifestation on screen. Today, we get news that those plans and expectations can be scratched.

IGN reports:

Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski recently appeared at San Diego Comic-Con Cinema Blend about the long-gestating game-to-film adaptation, where he said that due to budget cuts by New Line Cinema the project is being retooled as a lower-budget sci-fi film along the lines of District 9.

This jives with recent updates that revealed the film’s $150 million budget had been slashed, original director Len Wiseman had walked away from it, and that the project had “gone back to the drawing board.”

Disctrict 9 is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi movies. It was an original story, with great action and awesome looking special effects. It even got some Oscar nominations, including Best Picture in 2009. The cost of doing D9? Around some $30 million. How much did it make? About $210 worldwide. So can GOW be done D9 style (low budget), and be successful? Yes it can. As long as the story adaptation is strong, and the effects are well done like in D9, GOW can be successful. I believe it would make more money than D9, since it’s got a huge video game following and plenty of marketing strong points to exploit. And if going low-buget is what it takes for this film to be finally get done, then they should do it already.

Routh Would Love To Return As Superman

The next Superman film is going to happen. The script has been written. It’s been stated that both, Jonah Nolan and David Goyer, are the frontrunners to direct it. Christopher Nolan will “godfather” the movie’s making. Lots of actors have been rumored for the part of The Man Of Steel. Still, there are many fans out there who want Brandon Routh to come back and reprise his role once again. Could Routh stage a fan-supported comeback and become Superman once more?

CinemaBlend reports:

Talking with the actor at a round-table interview for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Routh said that he has not yet heard anything about the Christopher Nolan-David Goyer written reboot, but would love to play the character again.

“I certainly would [love to play Superman again]. As much as I say I’m working to shake that off or shake it up, I certainly don’t want to extinguish or get rid of it because it was a great honor and I would love to be able to return as that character.”

When told about an internet groundswell supporting his return, Routh said that he wants it to “turn into a tsunami,” adding “I think the brothers Nolan are both very talented and so that makes it a different kind of film that would be than Bryan’s vision, which I think was a very nice film that I’m very proud of.”

I’m all for the Nolan/Goyer reboot, but I’d have to say that I like this idea. Routh was great in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Yes, the movie wasn’t that awesome, but it wasn’t Routh’s fault. He came in, and did an outstanding job. Yup, I’m all for the idea of Routh coming back for The Man Of Steel.

Could this happen? Would WB accept this and offer him the job once more? Does a reboot imply that all actors need to be new? What do you guys think; want Routh back?

New Green Lantern Character Posters

Obviously, it’s easy to see how DC was overshadowed by Marvel at Comic-Con this year. With only The Green Lantern at hand, how can you compete with Marvel’s Captain America, Thor, and of course, The Avengers. Maybe next year, DC will bring it’s power players like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. And what about a JLA film? We can only hope. That being said, here’s some new Green Lantern goodies. Today we get some character posters straight from WB, that include Reynolds, Lively, Strong and Sarsgaard. Each poster includes a piece of the Green Lantern oath.

I like the character posters. They’re pretty cool, thanks in part to including lines of the Green Lantern oath. I’ll really get excited about this film, when we get footage. Please give us a teaser trailer!

What do you guys think? Are we to get scared that WB/DC has only been showing off pictures of Ryan Reynolds in regular clothes, since getting lukewarm reviews of the EW cover?

Twilight heartthrob Robert Pattinson is getting heat from paparazzi for allegedly slamming into a parked car in Malibu.

The owner of the car who shares Pattinson’s name, Rob Gottschlich, had the following to say about the incident:

“If I had a nice car like a Lexus or something, maybe [I would be concerned], but I’ve got an old Kia. I am going to ask Rob next time I see him for free tickets to the next Twilight film.”

We can all learn a lesson from Robert Pattinson: If you inflict damage on a car whose owner shares your name, you’ll get away with it.

The Avengers Comic-Con Highlights

Saturday was Marvel’s big day at Comic-Con 2010. They showed off some teasers regarding their future movies: Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, and The Avengers. Let’s take a look at some of the “live blogging” highlights from The Avengers’ big panel.

7:39 Avengers teaser played, Samuel L. Jackson voice over about getting Earth’s mightiest heroes together:

UPDATE: The full quote: “And there came a day, a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes and heroines found themselves united against a common threat. On that day, the Avengers were born.” The Avengers logo is slick and a little Iron Man 2 ish– expect it to pop up online very soon.

7:40 Jackson, Gregg, Scarlett Johansson, Hemsworth, Evans, and Robert Downey Jr. are all on stage! Robert Downey Jr. takes over on the mic and gets ready to make two more introductions.

7:42 THE AVENGERS ASSEMBLE! JEREMY RENNER COMES OUT AS HAWKEYE! MARK RUFFALO COMES OUT AS HULK! JOSS WHEDON IS DIRECTOR!

7:44 Whedon says he’ll blow it, and he needs the audience’s support. The standing ovation and thunderous applause oughta do it.

7:45 The assembled Avengers stand for photo ops (great photo here) as the walls of Hall H metaphorically come crashing down. Marvel has once again ended the last Hall H panel with footage that people will be talking about for the next year.

Wow. Now this is what I’m talking about. If this stuff doesn’t excited you, then you need to visit the doctor right away. Although we don’t get any actual footage or any plot details, we at least get the whole full cast representing The Avengers. We also get a small teaser, and The Avengers logo for the film. The roster of actors for this film, like director Whedon himself said, is just insanely awesome! Can’t wait for it. Too excited now…must lay down. Marvel is betting hard on this, and it shows.
